Ptarmigan Tunnel
Glacier National Park, West Glacier, MT
Admission: Glacier National Park 7 day permit – $30.00

The hike to Ptarmigan Tunnel begins behind the cabins near the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.
Ptarmigan Trail is a moderate to strenuous 10-mile roundtrip day hike trail that features beautiful wild flowers and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from March until September.

If the Ranger Station is closed for the season than the tunnel will also be closed. Tunnel usually opens mid to late July. The hike is not worth the effort when the tunnel is closed.

FYI: You are entering a wilderness area and must accept certain inherent dangers, including snow, steep terrain, water and wildlife. There is no guarantee of your safety.

Fun fact: Two opposing steel jackhammers drilling from either side of the tunnel and a series of ten-hole rounds of dynamite gradually broke through the mountain in less than three months. A wide area, originally for guide and tourist horses, extends from each portal with a masonry retaining wall.
