Penndot Road Sign Sculpture Garden is a collaborative effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and art students at Allegheny College that began in 2002 to give a distinct look to Meadville’s gateway from the west. Using recycled signs and tires, it is truly one of a kind.
Originally called “Read Between the Signs,” It’s on a fence at the PennDOT maintenance building along Route 322.
Like the best art, the Meadville PennDOT sculptures are equal parts wonder and inspiration.
What you’ll notice first if you are coming from the west, is the Signs and Flowers part of the art exhibit. There’s also a wall of signs called the Read Between the Signs mural that is alongside the highway and so much more.
A fun and whimsical stop the whole family will enjoy.
*While visiting the PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden, make sure to use extreme caution as you will be standing along a very busy road.

Fun Fact: The highway department art display, fed by an apparently limitless supply of old metal reflective signs, continues to grow and add more sculptures, making return visits rewarding.
