Privately owned, Dismals Canyon is a maze of meandering canyons, huge boulders, caves, and grottoes, all bisected by the flowing waters of Dismals Branch Creek.
This natural wonder is unique in that it is one of the oldest stands of primeval forest still open to the public.
A National Natural Landmark, Dismals Canyon is one of the best places in the world to see Dismalites, the larvae of a bug that glows with bioluminescence at night. The only known way to check out these tiny life forms is to take a guided nighttime tour through the canyon.
